Where Are the Quality Job Candidates?
Are you concerned about finding qualified job candidates in our region? According to last year’s alarming State of the St. Louis Workforce Report [Published by St. Louis Community College Workforce & Employer Services], 45% of our workforce lacks critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and 43% lacks teamwork or collaboration skills. Contrast that with a recent Gallup survey that reports “Creativity is a business asset. If businesses want the best new ideas, they must not only permit but also actively encourage creativity.”
What can we do? At Alliance, we are supporting Springboard to Learning because they equip our local students with the 21st-century skills necessary to improve academic performance and personal growth. Their specialized programs in 127 St. Louis area pre-K to middle schools use Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and STEM to develop critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. Annually, they serve an average of 50,000 students, 69% economically disadvantaged and under-resourced. For example:
Robin Hattori, Senior Project Manager, Washington University in St. Louis – School of Medicine, earned her Masters’ degree from Washington University, and has served on the University staff since 1999. She got her start with Springboard: “As a third grader who walked to the neighborhood public school every day, I had never traveled outside of Missouri except when Ms. Edward’s Springboard to Learning lessons transported our class. She sparked my imagination and influenced my worldview. Because of her, I became involved in global human rights issues in high school. I chose Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service for college and spent a year abroad.”
